Etherow Country Park

Sightseeing attraction | Stockport | England | United Kingdom

The Etherow Country Park in Stockport, England, is a vast and versatile attraction that delights nature lovers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. This landscape park, located in the heart of the Etherow/Goyt Valley, is one of the oldest country parks in Britain, covering approximately 97 hectares of green space. Situated in a picturesque area between the cities of Stockport and Manchester, it offers an impressive variety of landscapes – from tranquil lakes to dense forests, gentle hills, and the eponymous River Etherow meandering through the grounds. The park is a popular destination for people looking to escape city life and enjoy the beauty of nature.

One of the main attractions of Etherow Country Park is the large lake near the entrance, providing an idyllic backdrop for numerous activities. Waterfowl such as ducks, swans, and colorful Mandarin ducks can often be seen here, attracting visitors with food. The lake is also a hotspot for leisure activities: sailors use it for small boats, while model boat enthusiasts send their detailed ships across the water. Anglers have designated areas where they can fish in peace, with the peaceful atmosphere complemented by the gentle sound of water and the chirping of birds. A flat path around the lake is particularly popular with walkers, as it is accessible and suitable for both strollers and wheelchairs.

Beyond the lake, the park opens up into a more varied landscape. Those venturing further into the park will encounter a network of walking trails leading through dense forests and along the river. A highlight is the small waterfall at the Weir, providing a picturesque photo opportunity that can be admired from a bridge. The wooded hills in the upper part of the park are a paradise for nature lovers: in spring, bluebells bloom here, while in autumn, the deciduous trees shine in warm gold and red tones. A hidden second lake, smaller and wilder than the main reservoir, is often inhabited by a family of swans, adding an additional touch of magic to the park. These sections are steeper and less developed, making them ideal for adventurous hikers seeking peace and seclusion.

Etherow Country Park is also an ecological gem, boasting over 200 plant species and more than 100 bird species, including kingfishers, herons, and woodpeckers. Its diverse habitats – from wetlands to meadows to woodland areas – provide a rich ecosystem for animals and plants. This natural beauty is preserved through the efforts of the Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, which manages the park as a local nature reserve and strictly regulates access to protect wildlife.

For families, the park offers numerous recreational opportunities. In addition to walking paths, there are picnic areas with benches overlooking the lake or waterfall. Children love feeding the ducks or discovering the "Fairy Garden" installation in the woods – a small, hidden attraction that sparks the imagination. The park is also dog-friendly, with plenty of space for walks with four-legged friends, as long as they are kept under control. A small café complements the experience with a selection of snacks, hot drinks, and ice cream, which are particularly enticing after a walk. The rustic decor and the view of the water make it a cozy spot for a break.

The atmosphere at Etherow Country Park is characterized by a mix of liveliness and serenity. While areas near the lake and café are often bustling, especially on weekends, the more remote walking trails offer a peaceful silence only interrupted by the sound of the river or rustling leaves. The park is easily accessible yet far enough from urban hustle and bustle to provide a sense of retreat. For those planning more than a brief visit, trips to nearby hills like Werneth Low can be combined to offer further views of the region.

Etherow Country Park stands out for its value for money and versatility. It is a place that does not require elaborate attractions to impress – its strength lies in the natural beauty and simple pleasures it offers. Criticisms are rare, although some visitors note that the paths can become muddy in the rain or that the café can be overcrowded on particularly busy days. Nevertheless, the overall impression is overwhelmingly positive: the park is a sanctuary that combines relaxation, exercise, and nature experience. For anyone visiting Stockport or the Manchester area, Etherow Country Park is a must-visit – a place that soothes the soul and invigorates the senses.

Beautiful park, love the walks, it does have a farm in there but is on a private road, so not sure if allowed down there. Has a lovely cafe with home made cakes and coffee was lovely.

Took the kids and some friends for a walk round here. Nice cafe, toilets, nice lake and a refreshing walk, particularly around the edges of the park it felt very secluded so had a great time. Close to home as well

1st time out around Etherow park and was a lovely walk! Took the dog around, I will say it would have been a little better if both sides were open but I am assuming this is the aftermath from the recent rains. Had a nice drink and the lovely cafe as well, really very enjoyable overall

Love Etherow. Flat paths to walk round , large lakes and two cafes ( we recommend the Potting Shed the most, especially their pizza nights, ice-cream and lamb hotpot!). Also two toilet blocks, one each end of the park. Lots of work happening here currently to spruce it up so some areas closed for few of the winter month whisky it's done. A wider loop goes into hilly woodland too. Lots of birds especially Mandarins and the occasional Heron too.

Lovely park. Beautiful scenery. Mixture of pathways concrete, wooded, mud trails. Lakes are fabulous with loads of wildlife. There is loads closed off due to the bad weather and trees fallen but work is being done to fix these areas.
